As the production of mate herb became very important for Paraná in 19th century, the construction of a railway linking Paranaguá to Curitiba was necessary. The railway is considered an engineering masterpiece.
Its construction began in 1880 and ended in 1885, crossing 110 km through the Atlantic Rain Forest. There are 14 tunnels and bridges to link Curitiba, located about 900 m above sea level. The train leaves Curitiba daily at 8:15 am. More information can be found on their website www.serraverdeexpress.com
